TOP TEN ANIME YOU CAN WATCH IF YOU LOVE ATTACK ON TITAN | LIST-EM. Article Image by MAPPA
Attack on Titan is a masterpiece, no doubt. It is one of the most influential series from recent years, and it has helped enormously in bringing more people to enjoy the marvels of Japanese animation.
However, the last season ended up just short of actually ending the series (the manga ended almost at the same time), so the final arc will be adapted into a movie that will be released near year’s end.
So, if you have an itch for some quality anime that will help you fill the long months until the movie is available, boy do I have a list for you.
As always, this top is based entirely around my tastes, and it isn’t a ‘best to worst’ ranking; it’s okay if you disagree with any and all my picks.
So, without further ado, let’s see my Top Ten Anime to watch if you loved Attack on Titan.
01 FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD

If it wasn’t apparent from my previous list (which you can read here), I love FMAB and I consider it one of the best pieces of animation ever made.
That said, this should be one of your top choices if you have just begun watching anime after finishing Attack on Titan.
The epic of the Elric brothers, written by the very talented Hiromu Arakawa is a beautiful story that explores political and philosophical themes, narrated through the experiences that Edward and Alphonse have in their search for the elusive philosopher's stone.
If you want beautiful 2D animation (for the most part, at least), an excellent plotline without any dragging, intelligently planned fights without unnecessary power-ups, and entertaining characters, FMAB is for you.

02 VINLAND SAGA (ATTACK ON TITAN WITH VIKINGS?)

Vinland Saga is a series that has several things in common with Attack on Titan.
Its anime adaptation, which you can watch on Amazon Prime, made by Wit studio, the ones responsible for the first three seasons of AoT.
Thorfinn, like Eren, seeks revenge on the person responsible for the death of his parents and eventually ends up experiencing events that change him -for better or worse.
Only here, instead of having titans, we have Vikings during the conquest of England.
I'd rather not tell too much, because practically any detail counts as a spoiler. I can only say that if you want that same feeling of awesome action scenes mixed with political drama, Vinland Saga is the right choice.

03 HELLSING: ULTIMATE

Hellsing is a manga by the amazing Kota Hirano, focusing heavily on European vampire mythology, and mixing elements of neo-gothic and neo-noir.
We follow the Royal Order of Protestant Knights, and Alucard, the original vampire, in their fight against supernatural beings to defend the kingdom of Great Britain.
Hellsing has two adaptations, the first, a 13-episode series that has little to do with the original material, and the Ultimate OVA series, which is a faithful adaptation of the manga.
Hellsing provides interesting characters, impressive combat, and spectacular animation that is still perfectly valid more than a decade later.
A recommendation for anyone who wants to see something more fantastical.
04 TRIGUN

I’ll be honest, Trigun has little to do with the style of series that Attack on Titan is, I just don’t have much of a chance to recommend it, and seriously, you should watch it.
The adventures of our lovable gunslinger, Vash ‘The Stampede’, as he discovers more about his past, and tries to hold firm to his pacifist ideals on a post-apocalyptic planet are wonderful.
Perhaps the 90’s animation style may cause some noise if you’re just starting out with anime, but the experience is well worth it.
It’s not for nothing that Trigun is one of the best anime of the decade.
05 CASTLEVANIA

Castlevania is one of the best things Netflix has done in recent years.
Adapting a video game to some other medium is always difficult, but the very talented staff in charge of it clearly don't just respect the source material, they're fans of it.
The series roughly adapts the third game in the franchise, but has clear influences from the visual style of Castlevania: Symphony of the night.
We follow Trevor Belmont, heir and last survivor of the clan in his fight against the malevolent Dracula.
The animation, although technically not an anime, takes strong influence from the medium, as you can see in the wonderful combat scenes that populate the series.
But not only does it have very well-executed fights, the script and characters written by Warren Ellis are excellent, and I can't get enough of them.
A definite recommendation if you haven't given it a chance yet.

06 GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX

While I would prefer the original '95 film as an entry point for the franchise, SAC, being a series that unfolds over 52 episodes, allows the world of GiTS to be told in a much, much deeper way, as well as more clearly showing the philosophical and political themes that the franchise deals with.
As in the film, we follow Lieutenant Motoko Kusanagi, and the agents of Public Security Section 9, dealing with various criminals - and a mastermind behind them - who replicates their ideals by taking advantage of the numerous body modifications that are commonplace in 2030s Japan.
GiTS is one of the biggest proponents of cyberpunk, and while it's far from the story style of Attack on Titan, it's a series I'd recommend with my eyes closed to anyone who wants to see something more mature.
07 MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS

Gundam is a fairly old franchise in the Japanese animation medium, and since its inception, has implemented numerous proposals that are developed under the same idea of humanity piloting giant robots.
Iron-Blooded Orphans is one of the most recent additions to the franchise, and one of my favorites - even if the more classic Gundam fans might take a dim view of me for it.
We follow Mikazuki and Olga, two orphaned child soldiers in the human colony on Mars.
When they get their hands on a Gundam, and when a supposedly easy protection task -of the head of the independence movement of Mars, Olga manages to see a way for them to regain their freedom with their own hands, and they end up creating their own mercenary company.
During the 50 episodes of the series, we see how they grow up, make mistakes, but carve their own destiny, nonetheless.
The story of Iron-Blooded Orphans is a beautiful one, and it's well worth watching.
08 RAGE OF BAHAMUT: GENESIS

Okay, now if what you liked about Attack on Titan were the fights full of self-determination moments, Rage of Bahamut is just what you want.
Being an adaptation of a card game, you wouldn't expect it to be this great, but the series made by MAPPA studio ended up having some of the best characters of the season it came out in.
With wonderful animation and a world full of magic (and I don't mean the literal magic in the world), Rage of Bahamut is an extremely entertaining experience.
Favaro, Amira, and Kaiser are an extremely solid trio of characters, and the moments they have together are memorable.
However, the high points of the series come when you have Favaro, an ordinary bounty hunter, fighting with everything in his power against monsters and dragons.
A short series but thoroughly worth watching.
09 FATE/STAY NIGHT: UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS

The Fate/ franchise encompasses games, manga, novels, movies, and series.
All forming part of the joint fictional universe created by its author, Kinoko Nasu, and called 'Nasuverso'.
The easiest entry point for this franchise is undoubtedly the 2014 adaptation by Unlimited Blade Works.
If from Attack on Titan you liked the superb animation done by studio Wit, let me tell you that UBW will delight you.
From UFOtable (the same people behind the Demon Slayer adaptation), UBW tells the story of Shirou Emiya, and how he's involved, unwittingly, in the 5th war for the Holy Grail, a magical object that can grant any wish.
With beautifully orchestrated combat, spectacular animation, and an excellent soundtrack, Fate/Stay Night is a series you should watch.

10 THE SAGA OF TANYA THE EVIL

To close the list, I chose a series that is quite easy to digest.
Youjo Senki (the original name of the series) is an adaptation of a light novel by Carlo Zen, where we follow a salaryman who is transported to another world by a being we only know as 'Being X' (a parallel reality set in WWII Europe, but with magic involved), but with the catch that he is reborn in the guise of a girl.
Tanya, the salaryman's current name, joins the army thanks to her enormous aptitude for magic, as she assumes it will be the easiest way to have a quiet life, but of course, things don't go as planned.
With plenty of scenes packed with explosions, spell displays, and rather ingenious use of 'dieselpunk' technology, Youjo Senki manages to become quite an entertaining show.
Which you can comfortably watch in one day, thanks to its 12 episodes+movie.
Anyway, these were my recommendations if you loved Attack on Titan and are at a loss of what to watch.
I tried to cover as many genres as possible, but alas, there’s so much I can do with only a top ten.
